(YOU ARE) The Light Of The World!

“Is Jesus your guest only in a little attic room? Then nobody knows He is there. His strength to protect you in the other rooms is lost. Throw open all the doors!”

-Corrie Ten Boom

My desire is to proclaim Christ. To make Him known. To share his love with everyone that I can.  It might mean striking up conversation with the person waiting next to you at the bus stop. It could be as simple as taking an interest in the life of the person sitting next to you on the bus. It might mean saying a simple ‘thank you’ to the bus driver as you get off the bus. Everywhere we go; there is an opportunity to shine God’s light. To take a step and put ourselves out there and be the odd one out. People will notice the difference.

In loving others as representatives of Christ, we ought to be proud advocates of his love.

I absolutely love the verse in Matthew 5 where we are told that we are the light of the world. Here, Jesus didn’t say, ‘I am the light of the world’, he said, “YOU”. You, my friend are called to shine God’s light. Not to keep his light in your room, but to shine it bright into the darkness. I love that we are told that we are not to keep God a secret. We are not allowed to hide his light. Our love for God should be totally public. We ought to be so on fire that we cannot hide it.

Today I had my very first day of University. I was scared. There are so many people bigger than me, older than me, smarter than me, wiser than me and braver than me.  At first I felt afraid.  The Atheists unite and debate their views, the Queers display their opinions visually, the Muslims wear their headdress and here I was: plain, little me. I know I have a light but I wondered how much light I could really shine. I felt afraid that my flame might be smothered. That intellectuals would outsmart me. I felt afraid that I would not have all the answers. I felt afraid of facing true opposition and feeling incredibly out numbered. I was dreading my first day of Uni.

At this point I was reminded that ‘If our God is for us, then who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). We have an almighty God on my side! We need not be afraid, but wholly trust in Jesus’ name. Through God, we are more than conquerors.

Remembering God’s truths gave me the courage to stand up and be brave. To reach out to others and to shine his light. I stood out. My confidence outweighed that of any other. It wasn’t me. It was Christ shining his light through me, into the darkness.

God wants to use us. He has chosen us. He has blessed us and loved us, not so that we might secretly treasure it but so that we might share it with others. As we share his love, we feel it more intensely ourselves.

So I encourage you to be brave. Be bold. Read the word and do what it says. Make your life a light that reflects God to those in the darkness around you. You won’t be able to hold back the smile on your face or the spring in your step!

“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colours in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.”

light shines out of darkness

When The Oceans Rage

There is nothing like a storm to comfort us.

It sounds ridiculous but I actually find storms really comforting. I’m not sure if it is that all the tension that has been blinding up is finally released or that the voices of the world around us seem to get drowned out in the thundering rain.

After two months of swimming in the ocean every day, tonight I trekked to the beach once more. I was alone in the rain and as I neared the coast, I came face to face with a wondrous, mighty sea thrusting its waves violently toward me. The water crashed against the rocks and sprayed in protest. I parked my car and ran toward it.

“And when the oceans rage, I don’t have to be afraid because I know that you love me”.

Singing out loud of God’s unfailing love. Yelling the word of truth passionately into the water-splinted wind. “God, your love never fails!”

“The wind is strong and the water’s deep
But I’m not alone here in these open seas
Cause your love never fails”

Life can be one hectic whirlpool. We feel that we are caught and dragged in a downward spiral and though we see the world spiralling around us, we need not be afraid. Our God is the same yesterday, today and forever. Crack open your Bible. Remember that famous story when Jesus calmed the storm?

“A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.  Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” – Mark 4:37-41

Who is this man? He is Jesus! He is my all time hero, my saviour, lord and friend.

Why is my life so different to so many others caving down around me? It’s not because of anything I have done. My life is incredible because I have Jesus in my life. This little boat I am in is my life. The ocean is the world we have to navigate. That same powerful man that was in that boat promises to be in mine.

Who is in your boat? What is going to happen when the wind starts howling and the waves toss your boat? When the world knocks you down, who will be there to save you? Invite Jesus on your boat now and he’ll be there when you need him. I promise.

Fear vs Living

Jesus said,”I came that they may have life and have it to the full”.

(John 10:10)

Today I listened to this song, Calvary, about Jesus death and the sacrifice he made for us and it totally spun me out. Jesus went through so much, just to save us. He came and he died and he rose, so that we might have life to the full. So that we can embrace life. So that we are no longer controlled by sin or subject to the world. Jesus defeated death so that we can overcome our fears. He wants us to enjoy life!

But how many of us have fears that sap our joy, haunt our thoughts and steal our time?

We simply cannot live if we become unhinged by fear. Jesus did not come so that we would be limited by our fears of uncertainty. Jesus came to set us free from the bondage of fear.

Perfect love drives out fear and Jesus is perfect love incarnate.

So perhaps we need to spend less time worrying and more time truly contemplating on what Jesus did. He suffered so much so that we could live life to the full! Are we going to embrace this precious opportunity or be bound by fear?

“Lest we forget

Jesus paid the price

Lest we forget

His awesome sacrifice

I will remember

Jesus nailed to that tree

And I remember

He was dying for me”

Let the truth of the matter hit home. Jesus went through all that he did so that you might have life to the full!
